"Tulips" Holland, Michigan

Holland Michigan is one of those special places. Here's a little history below courtesy Wikipedia....

Holland was settled in 1847 by Dutch Calvinist separatists, under the leadership of Dr. Albertus van Raalte, who were escaping from persecution in The Netherlands. Van Raalte chose the land due to its proximity to the Black River where it streamed to Black Lake (now Lake Macatawa) which, in turn, led to Lake Michigan. The land was inhabited by the Ottawa, which after a cultural clash with the new Dutch settlers relocated to Northport, Michigan. In Holland's early history, Van Raalte was a spiritual leader, as well as overseeing political, educational and financial matters. In 1847 Van Raalte established a congregation of the Reformed Church in America, which would later be called the First Reformed Church of Holland. In 1867, Holland was incorporated as a city with Isaac Cappon being the city's first mayor.

"Big Red" Holland Harbor Lighthouse Michigan

Lighthouses in the winter take on a completely different look.

Some History....

A History of the Holland Harbor and its Lighthouse
The Holland Harbor Lighthouse is an integral part of the history of the Holland Harbor. A stormy history it is, indeed, filled with disappointment countered by determination.

Soon after the Dutch settlers came to the area in 1847, their leader, Dr. Albertus C. Van Raalte, wrote to the governor and the U.S. Congress to request funds for the building of a harbor. Van Raalte knew from the beginning that if this new community were to flourish, access to Lake Michigan, to and from Black Lake, (now Lake Macatawa) was essential. However, the entrance to the lake from Lake Michigan was blocked with sandbars and silt.

"Sebewaing" Saginaw Bay

Sunset on the Saginaw Bay near Sebewaing, Michigan. 8x10 Acrylic on Canvas panel.

Rev. John F. J. Auch, a Lutheran minister from Ann Arbor, brought his group here in 1845. He was looking for good farmland for a settlement and planned on doing missionary work among the Indians. The village was first spelled Sibbewaing, an Indian name for crooked creek, of which one flowed nearby.
Sebewaing, pronounced See-ba-wing, is well known for it's great walleye fishing and the annual Sugar Festival. It is also home to the Luckhard Museaum and the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum.
Crooked Creek Marina offers 125 boat slips and the new county park has 30 campsites located on 14 acres of land adjacent to the Sebewaing River.

Sold "Covered Bridge" Ada, Michigan

Here's a 9x12" acrylic of a covered bridge at Ada, Michigan
Sold

Some History...
Today's Ada Covered Bridge (a.k.a. Bradfield Bridge) spans the Thornapple River connecting the Village of Ada on one side with a public park on the other side. Originally, legislation enacted in 1867 authorized Ada Township to borrow up to $3,000 to build or repair bridges in the area, which is laced with rivers and streams. The original bridge was built during that time by William Holmes. The design for the original "Brown" trusses used to build the bridge was patented by Josiah Brown of Buffalo, New York in 1857. A timber bearing his name was uncovered during repair work on the bridge in 1913, when the trusses were modified. The present structure is a reconstructed wooden truss bridge measuring 14 feet wide and 125 feet long and is open to pedestrian traffic only. The bridge is maintained by the Kent County Park System.

From an old photo I had of a Rocky Mountain scene... I used an impasto technique here to get some texture into the snow and mixed cadmium orange into my base colors to suffuse the glow throughout the painting.
